Instead, it was smoked out in a more literal sense, a wildfire at Wentworth curtailing the three round final event and leaving Alice Hewson as the winner of the Grand Finale and Charley Hull as the winner of the Order of Merit.
Hull’s win was secured by her excellent 65 on The Berkshire’s Blue Course in what proved to be the final round of the event. Afterwards, the Solheim Cup star described the course as among her top five in England.
While attention will naturally fall on the unexpected end to the tournament, the ongoing generosity and proactivity of all involved in creating the series should be congratulated. From Liz Young’s simple but brilliant idea, Justin and Kate Rose’s enthusiastic support, and the involvement of corporate sponsors, the backers of the Rose Series should be hugely proud of the eight weeks of outstanding entertainment and high-quality golf.
Among the supporters of the event is specialist research firm Sports Marketing Surveys and its chairman Stephen Proctor, who offered a £7,500 scholarship for one participant in the Series. The selection panel for the award comprises Stephen alongside former head of the European Tour Ken Schofield and golf journalist Lewine Mair. The recipient will be the player that the panel judges to have displayed the greatest skill, need, ambition and determination throughout the eight events. To qualify, the player must be a current Ladies’ European Tour player who does not have LPGA playing rights. During the high-quality Series, a number of candidates emerged to fit the bill, leaving the panel spoilt for choice. The winner will be announced in the coming days.
Commenting on the event’s unforeseen ending, Justin Rose, watching on from San Francisco in preparation for the US PGA Championship, said: “Our mission was to serve the ladies and provide an opportunity for them to play and sharpen up for their respective seasons. So the last thing we want to do now is create a burden for them having to fit in the final round at a later date. A natural act of God forced us to this point and Kate and I wish the ladies all the best as they prepare for their upcoming events.”
The blaze that ended the Rose Series might yet prove to be outlasted by the fire that it has lit under women’s golf.
